Truman Little White House - Historic House


Truman Little White House

The Little White House, located at 111 Front Street, Key West was built in 1890 on the waterfront for housing two families, the base commandant and paymaster. The historic house has been home to presidents, base commanders, scientists and inventors as well. During the Spanish American War the house served as command headquarters and even hosted President William Howard Taft who visited this site in December 1912.

Thomas Edison the famous inventor lived here for six months during World War I and invented 41 new weapons for the war effort. The house became famous because President Harry S. Truman spent around 175 days here due to which the house was nicknamed “The Little White House”. During his tenure the house served as his office where bills were enacted, policies discussed, budgets prepared and State of the Union addresses polished. The house also served as the Naval Station commandant’s house until 1974.

Harry S. Truman Little White House was thrown open to public in 1991 as a historic site and museum without disturbing its official use. The house boasts of lots of attractions relating to the past and visitors get chance to have a glimpse of original furniture, rare photographs, the famous Truman poker table and lots more. Regular tours are being conducted for visitor’s form 9.a.m to 5 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
