Fort Zachary Taylor State Park also known as Fort Taylor is located near the southern tip of Key West, Florida. Construction of the fort began in 1845 and was finally completed in 1866. The fort, named after US President Zachary Taylor in 1850 was built 1200 feet off shore from Key West as part of a mid-1800s plan to defend the southeast coast through a series of forts. In 1971, the fort got the distinction of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1973 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

The fort has gone through lots of excavation activities which started in 1968. Excavation resulted in unearthing of numerous guns and ammunition from the Civil War. However, numerous arms and ammunition still remain buried but still it is regarded as the largest collection of Civil War cannons in the U.S. The fort was thrown open to public in July of 1985 and is being managed by the Florida Park Service since 1976.
